dots. film band, a group of three musicians who compose music to soundtrack contemporary short films live.
Unique in the U.K, dots. collaborate with established and emerging filmmakers working in the fields of live-action, animation, silent film and new media filmmaking.

Combining the live sound-tracking tradition established in the early days of cinema, but with the best of modern-day film subjects, styles, techniques, and a century of cinematic influences and developments. dots. film band add another dimension to the film experience using the power of live music to create exceptional multi-sensory events, embracing the swelling interest in the art of the short-film and creating a quasi-Wagnerian “total artwork” for the 21st century.

dots. have collaborated with a diverse selection of film-makers who work in a variety of media from stop-frame animation, through to live action and CGI. Artists we have worked with include Virginia Head (Best Welsh artist award 2007) who has worked for several award-winning animation companies across Europe and in the USA, and Rhiannon Evans, a young, promising filmmaker whose work has recently been shown in the prestigious Clermont-Ferrand short film festival in France.

dots. film band have performed and developed their art with showcases at SWN Festival, The Trailerpark Film Festival and the National Experimentica Festival, to an overwhelmingly positive reaction by programmers and public alike, and we look forward to taking this exciting and original project out to a wider audience.

For their current project, due to tour the UK in November 2011, dots. film band have taken six contrasting shorts, encompassing silent, animation and live-action from six up-and-coming British filmmakers, and created soundtracks to perform live on a vast array of instruments and found objects as required by each film.

These films include a painted glass animated with a tale of distance, ageing, longing and a seagull; a stop-frame post-apocalyptic Frankenstein’s monster, an exploration of the consequences of immortality; and a romance that takes in the triumphs and pitfalls of love as played by people made of string.

dots. film band formed in 2009 as a splinter project initiated by members of the Cardiff New Music Collective (www.cnmc.co.uk). This tour has the support of the Arts Council of Wales.

SOME REACTIONS TO DOTS. EVENTS:

“As far as I know there aren’t any groups in the U.K. working the way dots. do with contemporary film and music…They do whatever it takes to get the right approach for each film by the sheer variety and scope of their music; guitars, synths, flutes, effects…even a bicycle! There’s a real sense of occasion with dots; they’ve ripped up the textbook for what you can do with a live film and a soundtrack!” John Rostron, SWN Festival Director

“stunning and extremely skilled” The Trailerpark Film Festival

“These musicians have the rare imagination to play nothing more than the essential notes that are necessary to give the images the right sound” The National Experimentica Festival

“A fantastic event. Their original performance and interaction with what was mostly a new audience had great feedback. Chapter Arts Centre is really pleased to have been able to support their performance.” Sally Griffiths, Chapter Arts Centre

(oedolion – £3, plant – £1) neu os mae rhywun yn dod i’r her ffilm hefyd (oedolion – £5 am y ddau, a £1.50 y plentyn) Grwp o dri cherddor sy’n cyfansoddi cerddoriaeth yn fyw ar gyfer traciau sain ffilmiau byrion cyfoes yw dots. film band. Yn unigryw drwy Brydain, mae dots. yn cydweithio gyda gwneuthurwyr ffilm sydd eisoes wedi’u sefydlu a rhai newydd sy’n datblygu, sy’n gweithio ym meysydd gwneud ffilmiau gweithgar byw, animeiddio, ffilmiau mud a ffilmiau cyfryngau newydd. Trwy gyfuno’r traddodiad o draciau sain byw a sefydlwyd yn nyddiau cynnar y sinema, ond gydag agweddau gorau ar destunau, mathau, a thechnegau ffilmiau cyfoes, a chanrif o ddylanwadau a datblygiadau sinematig, mae dots. film band yn ychwanegu dimensiwn arall i brofiad ffilm gan ddefnyddio cerddoriaeth fyw i greu digwyddiadau aml-synhwyrol eithriadol, trwy gynnwys y diddordeb cynyddol mewn ffilmiau byrion a chreu “gwaith celf cyfannol” lled-Wagnerian ar gyfer yr 21ain ganrif. Mae dots. wedi cydweithio gydag amrywiaeth helaeth o wneuthurwyr ffilm sy’n gweithio mewn cyfryngau amrywiol megis animeiddio ‘ffrâm-stop’, i weithred fyw a ‘CGI’. Ymysg yr artistiaid sydd wedi gweithio gyda ni mae Virginia Head (Enillydd Gwobr am yr Artist Gorau Cymreig yn 2007) sydd wedi gweithio i nifer o gwmnïau animeiddio arobryn ar draws Ewrop ac yn yr UDA, a Rhiannon Evans, gwneuthurwr ffilm ifanc addawol sydd eisoes wedi dangos ei gwaith yng ngwyl ffilmiau byrion pwysig Clermont-Ferrand yn Ffrainc. Mae dots. film band wedi perfformio ac wedi datblygu eu celfyddyd trwy arddangos yng Ngwyl SWN, Gwyl Ffilm Trailerpark a’r Wyl Experimentica Cenedlaethol; maent wedi cael ymateb hynod o bositif gan raglenwyr a’r cyhoedd fel ei gilydd, ac edrychwn ymlaen at fynd â’r prosiect cyffrous a gwreiddiol hwn allan i gynulleidfa ehangach. Ar gyfer eu prosiect cyfredol, sydd i fod i fynd ar daith o gwmpas Prydain ym mis Tachwedd 2011, mae dots. film band wedi cymryd chwe ffilm fer hollol wahanol i’w gilydd, sy’n cynnwys rhai mud, animeiddio a gweithred fyw gan chwech o wneuthurwyr ffilm Prydeinig addawol, ac wedi creu traciau sain i’w perfformio ar amrywiaeth eang o offerynnau, ac wedi cael hyd i eitemau oedd eu hangen ar bob ffilm unigol. Roedd y ffilmiau hyn yn cynnwys gwydr wedi’i baentio animeiddiedig gyda stori am bellter, heneiddio, hiraeth a gwylan; ffrâm-stop bwystfil Frankenstein ôl-apocalyptaidd, ystyried goblygiadau anfarwoldeb, a rhamant sy’n delio gyda buddugoliaethau a pheryglon cariad lle mae’r bobl wedi cael eu gwneud o gortyn. Yn 2009 y sefydlwyd dots. film band, yn brosiect a ddeilliodd o rywbeth a gychwynnwyd gan aelodau Cardiff New Music Collective (www.cnmc.co.uk). Mae Cyngor Celfyddydau Cymru’n cefnogi’r daith hon.

YMATEBION I DDIGWYDDIADAU DOTS. : “Hyd y gwn i does ’na’r un grwp arall yn gweithio ym Mhrydain yn yr un ffordd â dots. gyda ffilm a cherddoriaeth gyfoes… Maen nhw’n gwneud yr hyn sydd ei angen i gael yr agwedd gywir ar gyfer bob ffilm, drwy amrywiaeth a chwmpas eu cerddoriaeth; gitâr, syntheseiddwr, ffliwt, effeithiau…beic hyd yn oed! Mae ’na ryw deimlad o achlysur gyda dots; maen nhw wedi chwalu’r llyfr sy’n nodi’r hyn y gellid ei wneud gyda ffilm fyw a thrac sain!” John Rostron, Cyfarwyddwr Gwyl SWN “gwefreiddiol a galluog dros ben” Gwyl Ffilm Trailerpark“Mae’r cerddorion hyn yn meddu ar ddychymyg anghyffredin i chwarae dim byd mwy na’r nodau hanfodol sydd eu hangen i drosglwyddo’r sain gywir i’r lluniau” Gwyl Genedlaethol Experimentica “Digwyddiad gwych. Y perfformiad gwreiddiol a’r rhyngweithio oedd wedi plesio’r gynulleidfa newydd orau. Mae Canolfan Celfyddydau Chapter yn falch dros ben iddo allu cefnogi eu perfformiad.” Sally Griffiths, Canolfan Celfyddydau Chapter
